When I tried to find out more about this film, all the reviews were like, “Bugonia’s BONKERS Ending Explained!” which made me think Bugonia, a film about two conspiracy theorists who kidnap a CEO because they think she’s an alien, wouldn’t answer a fucking thing.
And boy were those reviews clickbait bullshit. Yeah, not everything gets answered, but everything related to the story does. I guess “that one throwaway plot point EXPLAINED!” doesn’t get as many clicks. Look, Bugonia answers the questions major questions you are asking in a very explicit ending.
Anyways, the majority of the story is about a manipulative CEO trying to convince a conspiracy theorist and his autistic cousin to let her go, which is a pretty stressful thing to watch. Because a wealthy CEO is already an incredible villain, and an autistic individual is someone you really want to protect. And the whole movie is them two plus a conspiracy theorist.
The whole dynamic is stressful, and then Act III gets even more stressful because they finally leave the confines of the basement, but the movie does wrap up with a decent enough bow. Yeah, some threads were left on the cutting room floor it seems, but the major ones weren’t; the ones the wrapped up the story were explained explicitly. So fuck that clickbait and get ready for a stressful and slow watch that’ll NOT Leave You Guessing About That BONKERS Ending!
