Monolord, Ghosts Of Glacier, and Mizmor make the type of music you feel like you want to get high to because of its cinematic, atmospheric nature, but then you remember it’s metal and you’ll just be seeing demons attacking you. At least, that’s how it felt to someone who covers shit ranging from Sunsquabi to all the metal you’ve seen recently.
But recently, I bought an Animals As Leaders album, and there were a lot of similar characteristics during this oddly intense show. Oddly because you wouldn’t expect cinematic and atmospheric to equate to “fuck yeah motherfuckers mosh mosh mosh!” but, hey, that was the vibe. Alongside, say, not as complicated riffs and lines as AAL, but still cool riffs and lines nonetheless.
But Monolord definitely had that intensity. They made me appreciate bring right in front of the speakers feeling my feet literally drop out from under me. Had I not been sober, that shit would’ve terrified me.
Which brings me back to the beginning; this is music that, on one hand, reminded me of Sunsquabi et al and therefore made me thing we should be high as fuck. But Monolord, and the others, reminded me of just how bad an idea that would be during a metal show.
