Alison Moyet today releases her eagerly-anticipated, career-spanning reworks album Key. The project sees Alison reviewing her back catalogue, selecting a divergent body of songs and alongside producer Sean McGhee, reframes them to hang together cohesively on the same wall. Some have naturally evolved through decades of live performances, and others, less noticed, she brings back to the table in order to know them better. To spend more time with them.
The album’s campaign has previewed the eclectic nature of the work. The song choice has been varied, from classic hits to deep cuts and new track (“Such Small Ale“), while the reworks have varied from being mindful revisions to radical reinventions.
Alison says, “’Key’ is a jamboree of songs taken from my 40 years as a solo artist, and revisited to sit aside one another as though they all were shaped in the same year and under the same roof. Two newly written songs open from the house to the garden, where new planting in some coming months may begin. Or not. Depends on the weather. Meanwhile a bus has been booked and I’m taking them on the road where I fully expect them to get along nicely or there’ll be sharp words. I won’t be having any nonsense.”
Alongside its preview tracks, Key highlights a wealth of fresh material for fans to immerse themselves within. The second brand-new song “The Impervious Me” is an obvious attraction, a message of stoic acceptance in a song of grand scaling drama that unites piano balladry, synth-pop motifs and luscious vocal textures. It was co-written by Sean McGhee and John Garden, who has been Alison’s semi-regular collaborator since 2002’s ‘Hometime’ tour. Highlights emerge at every turn, from a glacial revamp of the hit “Is This Love?” to a solo version of her Lightning Seeds collab “My Best Day” shaped entirely in her own identity, and a show-stopping finale with the climactic “You Don’t Have To Go.”
The project has simultaneously sparked a time of rediscovery for the chart-topping, BRIT Award winning Alison Moyet. Radio 2, The Times and Classic Pop have put her firmly back in the spotlight, while devoted fans have had plenty more to enjoy via the launch of her in-depth international #1 podcast ‘40 Moyet Moments’.
Physical copies of Key are available to buy HERE, including two double-vinyl variants, a CD and a cassette. The ‘Key – Moyet Moments Edition’ digital format provides greater insight into its songs, with Alison leading a track-by-track commentary in which she is joined by the album’s producer Sean McGhee and the ‘40 Moyet Moments’ podcast host Steve Coats-Dennis.
