Be Kind: Rewind

Metal is a genre of music literally designed to allow you a safe environment to release your anger.

Ok, maybe not literally, but still, why did you evolve into dicks Denver?

Victim Of Fire opened and were nice as can be. Growling and screaming followed by thanking and community. Fantastic, positive, Victim Of Fire is the epitome of metal. And Denver, you reacted in kind – you gave these timid local rockers a well deserved circle pit.

You gave Dead Heat an even bigger pit, although I’m not sure it was given as much as taken forcefully. Dead Heat were like Full Of Hell without the baggage of looking like my old boss. Like, the house lights were on, but it made sense because it was that intense. Like, you didn’t have time to think about maybe getting in the pit because, straight from the get go, there was no other option. Like, good luck trying to stand still.

Two bands down, two to go. We were nice, we were forced into aggression, we know what to expect – surely nothing negative will happen.

Necrot, a band that took a little while to get comfortable, took the stage next. Like Victim Of Fire, you gave them what they wanted – a circle pit. The biggest so far. And you even let me stand front of stage to collect my photos. Sweetness. How thoughtful.

But before Cavalera could take the stage, apparently all this practice in comraderie and respect was fruitless, because it took a crew member to stop a fight from breaking out. Not only did a fight have to be extinguished, but bad actors in the crowd starting chanting as if this was an Orgy concert instead of a well oiled and on time machine. Seriously, with all the previous aggressive pits and niceness and community, what the fuck happened?

Now it did come to a stop as soon as Cavalera played on time because there was no reason to be antsy you assholes. That first note calmed everyone down enough to create the biggest circle pit of the night. And this is where I apologise, because it was so big I couldn’t get my photos. And where I apologise to the numerous people I tapped with my camera accidentally because, you know, the pit was so big. And where I apologise for letting one rip, although I know it had no smell to it, but still, you could probably hear it.

It shouldn’t take the headline act to get you to act nice. This is Denver. This is metal. This is community. Act like it. And, as I can tell you from experience, it’s not hard to apologise if your attitude slips.
