GA: Feb 14, 2025 – Velveteers Day

Valentine’s Day, now locally known as Velveteers Day. What a sweaty night. I swear that was sweat in my eyes, not tears. People were crowd surfing, and of course there were like 7 photographers.

Diva Cup came on and played. They all fully embodied fem punk, new wave riotgrrrrl. I fell in love with the lead singer wearing the band’s merch with no shame. And if it were me, I would do the same – the shirt is killer.

Cherry Spit get better every time I see them. They got on stage, set up quickly, and 2 seconds after their last note Wayde was tearing down the drums. I have always enjoyed the small chats before and after shows. Maybe I will catch them headlining a big-ass show one day, summit style. They can take this sound very far! Digital Worm is dropping in at slot 80 for my songs of the year 2024 according to broken-ass Spotify. When that Buh Nuh Uh started screaming from the guitar, I had a little moment and got in the pushpit with local legends Tiny Tomboy. Seriously, this felt like a locals-only show; It was a night of name-dropping, that’s for sure. If there was a social credit score, some very choice people were in attendance. I 1000% did start dissociating as soon as the room filled up. Too many people, and not enough escape paths.

I was able to catch Velveteers open for the Voidz back in 2018 and I was incredibly impressed for a Denver band – they played tight with much steeze. ESPECIALLY it being a nontraditional three piece. They make that shit work overtime. This time the band came out in very formal attire. The lead singer Demi wore a wedding gown, veil, and wrestling shoes – a woman who will chokehold your beating heart into submission – accompanied by her squad of percussionists. The stage was set for a night of tom fuckery. When you are a band in your home town, playing for all your pals, this is the dream come true. They have never disappointed and I don’t think they ever will. This was only the 2nd album they produced, and Demi made a super fancy super tall cake for the show (nonedible – I asked :()

I also ran into Dana from Indie 102.3 and we had such a wonderful and lovely conversation. A conversation about Colorado Springs. And if I’m brutally honest, I don’t hold the Springs in high regard. Dana however expressed how Denver has already had its queer renaissance and she is working hard to show 719 some love. I applaud her with every fiber of my being. Unlike me who left the Springs behind when it needed so much love to make it as good as it should be. I left feeling so hopeful in that regard.

Thanks again @paaaate! And thanks to everyone that joins the mailing list or buys merch! That shit is tight.
