Jehnny Beth is one of the most dazzling musicians in the rock game. With Savages, she stormed onto the stages in 2013 – and in the truest sense of the word. The dark, driving sound of the band anticipated the still rampant post-punk hype by a few years. Her poetic, angry, erotic solo debut “To Love Is To Live” (2020) then combined jazz, electronic noise, industrial and pop into a unique sound.
Now Jehnny Beth returns with the new single “Broken Rib” – and the fans of the Savages should be happy. The track is dark, aggressive, hypnotic. Alone, as she once sings this line with clenched teeth to shredded guitars “We learn to breathe with a broken rib”, and then bursts into a loud scream – that’s great cinema. Jehnny Beth said, “I knew if I ever sang again it would have to start with a scream.” The song “Broken Rib”, but also the album “You Heartbreaker, You” announced for the end of August, had been for her like a catharsis. We live in dark times, she says, full of barbarism and tragedy. For me it was clear: either we learn to yell out loud, or we will have to learn how to whisper. ‘
