Conjuring: Last Rites is the latest slow burn installment in the Conjuring universe, and knowing James Wan (creator of Saw), unfortunately not the last.
First things first, in true Saw fashion (and I say this as someone who enjoys the Saw franchise and can spend a weekend watching all them in order), the previous films are thrown out the window in favour of whatever the fuck they want to do this time. IE they totally ignored the daughter the Warrens already had in Annabelle in favour of a new daughter. For some reason.
But the big thing that irked me was the story being scrapped when it was inconvenient for cliche and stereotyped scares. Like, why is an excited extrovert in her room during a party looking at photo negatives? Oh, because they needed to do a scare. Cool. Oh, did something crazy scary just happen and you have the opportunity to run? Quick! Don’t.
This isn’t a slasher. It’s supposed to be a very serious ghost hunting flick. And it wasn’t.
