When The Music Pisses You Off

Sometimes when you’re at a show, you don’t connect with the music and you feel like turd. But metal is a special type of music where it doesn’t matter if you connect or not, you’re gonna feel exactly as the bands intended – pissed the fuck off. And I felt that way.

Now, I didn’t start that way. I actually started in a hilarious mood because metal band names are so… silly. Excrescence. Organectomy. Inferi, which isn’t as funny. And Defeated Sanity, which at least is words. And with such silly band names, it makes sense metal logos are impossible to read (unless, of course, you’re Party Cannon).

That made me chuckle. But once the music started, as expected, I felt pissed off. It didn’t matter if I connected to the music or not – I felt how I was supposed to. I loathed the constant blast beats and red bath of Excrescence, but they wanted me to feel angry and I did. Success.

I loved the groovy and rhythmic nature of Organectomy, but I felt pissed because it was metal and angry and aaahhhh. Success.

Inferi didn’t even play the disgruntled characters that metal musicians sometimes play. They’re just cool dudes, with fun crowd banter, and wishing more people happy birthday because for some reason that’s a thing bands must do nowadays. But it’s metal – I know how I’m supposed to feel. And I felt it. Success.

And Defeated Sanity pissed me off the most. Mainly with the seizure inducing lights that happened constantly and weren’t linked to the beats of the songs. The lights simply existed and hurt my head. And it pissed me off. Success

Regardless of what was happening, the emotion was consistent. And it was consistent because metal is a genre that lives to make you feel a certain way. If you go into an indie show, or a rock show, or a rap show, you kinda won’t know exactly what you’re going to feel. Good? Laidback? Depressed? Angry?

But if you’re at a metal show, you know exactly what you’re getting, and this show was no exception – anger from beginning to end. There was some groove, there was some kindness, there was lights that looked broken but really weren’t for some reason, but at the end of the day… fuck you .|..
